Enigmatic protagonist Axel, aged about 40, is a doctor who no longer practices his craft, for reasons we never really discover. Set in Buenos Aires, he is living temporarily with his sister and her children, of whom the eldest child bonds well with him. Silent and pensive, his life is empty of action, and he just exists a little between the people and things around him. One day, he meets a young, pregnant woman, Erika, in a café and a relationship develops.

El enigmático protagonista, Axel, un hombre de unos cuarenta años, es un médico que ya no practica su profesión, por razones que nunca conoceremos. Radicado en Buenos Aires, vive temporalmente con su hermana y los hijos de ella, y tiene una relación especial con el menor de ellos. Callado y caviloso, su vida está vacía de acciones, y sólo lleva una existencia módica entre la gente y las cosas que lo rodean. Un día conoce a una joven embarazada en un café y se desarrolla una relación entre ambos.

 

Premier long-métrage du réalisateur et homme de théâtre argentin Santiago Loza, Extraño nous plonge dans un univers singulier, plus proche, en littérature et malgré le titre, de celui de "L'Homme sans Qualités" de Robert Musil que de "L'Etranger" d'Albert Camus. Il nous conte l'errance d'Axel, un médecin qui n'exerce plus et dont les seuls rapports humains sont ceux avec sa soeur et ses neveux. C'est un être abstrait, absent, qui existe mais dans le regret de ce qu'il n'est pas ; intemporel car, bien qu'il ne soit pas amnésique, sans mémoire. Sa rencontre avec une jeune femme enceinte est l'occasion pour lui de transformer, provisoirement, le cours de sa vie et de voler un peu de bonheur et de souvenir au temps.

Santiago Loza propose une mise en scène réellement inventive, alternant contemplation (natures mortes photographiques) et longs travellings, mais sans fioritures, dans une sécheresse presque ascétique.
Primer largometraje del realizador y hombre de teatro argentino Santiago Loza, Extrañonos sumerge en un universo singular, más próximo, en literatura y a pesar del título, al de El hombre sin atributos de Musil que al de El extranjero de Camus.(...) Loza propone una puesta en escena realmente inventiva, que alterna la contemplación (naturalezas muertas fotográficas) y largos travellings, pero sin florituras, con una sequedad casi ascética.

Este film de pequeños gestos, de sugeridos inasibles, se inscribe en la estética del seco minimalismo del nuevo cine argentino, muy cerca del espíritu de Lisandro Alonso y Ana Poliak, quien es la montajista. Extraño, sin duda, misterioso y fascinante, este primer opus del cordobés Santiago Loza.

Tackling a script where the plot strictly isn’t interested in the world surrounding its characters enabled Loza to concentrate on the almost claustrophobic and mundane world of its main characters, which in turn allows the film to home in on Chavez’s talents to portray such a shell shocked character.

It would be inconceivable to mention this films presence without noting the work of Willi Behnisch, who seems to have captured the mood of the story in every frame without ever overstating it. He establishes a strong relationship between Axel’s thoughts and feelings, and the atmosphere of the world around him. From start to finish, the aesthetics take on a chilly, even cold vibe, except when Axel has involved himself with the positive role of caring for the pregnant lady. This small key point becomes the heart of the film and the main signifier of what Loza is trying to tell us; it’s the small gestures and courtesies that often mean the most.
Indeed, this film does not tarnish itself with allegories or hidden meanings, instead it is clear, direct and seems to pin down a feeling which we’ve all been through. It would be hard to find an adult who can’t relate to Axel’s situation. Bear in mind that this film needs to be viewed in an attentive mindset.
Sería inconcebible mencionar la presencia de este film sin señalar la labor de Willi Behnisch, que parece haber capturado en cada cuadro el estado de ánimo de la historia sin caer nunca en la exageración. Establece una fuerte relación entre los pensamientos y los sentimentos de Axel, y la atmósfera del mundo que lo rodea.(...) Un film muy claro y directo, que no se demora en plantear alegorías o significados ocultos.

Santiago Loza (Córdoba, 1971), director y guionista procedente del campo teatral, es uno de los nombres a tener en cuenta en el cine argentino actual. Su último largometraje, Los labios, codirigido con Ivan Fund, concitó elogios entre la crítica, al punto de ser una de las películas "importantes" del cine argentino en 2010. De Extraño, su opera prima, guardo un excelente recuerdo. Llegada por torrent o mula hace siglos, sólo queda agradecer al filántropo anónimo, y al también anónimo que hizo los subtítulos franceses.
