Arroz amargo
 Francesca, joven camarera de un hotel, roba un collar a un cliente por instigación de su amante Walter. Ambos escapan y Francesca se mezcla con un grupo de trabajadoras del arroz que parten en tren para el campo. En el dormitorio, una trabajadora le roba el collar a Francesca.
  El título de la película, Riso Amaro, tiene doble sentido, porque la palabra “Riso” en italiano, tiene dos significados: “Arroz” y “Risa”. Por lo que se puede interpretar tanto como “Arroz Amargo” o “Risa Amarga”. Es una combinación de melodrama, intriga criminal, critica social y un toque de erotismo, que para aquella época, era algo fuerte. Se filmó con algunas técnicas novedosas para el cine Italiano, tomadas del cine estadounidense, como "el uso de grúas, barridos descriptivos, "travellings" de observación y giros de seguimiento". Todo lo anterior, unido con ciertos elementos del Neorrealismo. Sobresale la actuación de la bella Silvana Mangano, Miss Roma 1946.

 Bitter Rice
 The story is set in Northern Italy at the beginning of the rice-planting season. A pair of small-time thieves named Walter and Francesca attempt to escape the authorities by hiding themselves in a crowd of female rice workers preparing to board a train for the rice fields. The two are separated when the authorities spot Walter, but Francesca ends up boarding the train and making friends with a peasant woman named Silvana. Francesca decides to join Silvana in the rice fields, but unfortunately, she lacks a work permit. As such, she's lumped in with the other “illegal” workers, and is forced to fight with disapproving documented workers and the field bosses to keep her new position.
