Ex-RAF pilot Clem Morgan is in desperate need of another war, or at least another diversion. He spends his time getting drunk and sinking into the oblivion of an uncertain future. More out of pure boredom than anything, Clem agrees to throw his lot in with a group of underworld figures, led by the suave, quick-tempered mastermind, Narcy (Griffith Jones).
Clem Morgan (Trevor Howard), ex piloto de la RAF, necesita desesperadamente otra guerra, o al menos una nueva diversión; mientras tanto, se pasa las horas bebiendo para olvidar su incierto futuro. Por puro aburrimiento, Clem acepta unirse a un grupo de figuras del bajofondo, que opera bajo las órdenes Narcy (Griffith Jones), un hampón atildado y de decisiones rápidas.
Many postwar American films noirs dealt with alienated but law-abiding veterans, some of them framed for crimes they did not commit, e.g. Alan Ladd's Johnny Morrison in The Blue Dahlia. This British effort goes a noteworthy step further by placing the protagonist in the criminal underworld. Its downbeat ending is consistent with its unrelenting cynicism.
Muchos films norteamericanos de la posguerra muestran a veteranos marginados pero respetuosos de la ley, que en muchos casos son perseguidos por crímenes que no han cometido, por ejemplo el Johnny Morrison de Alan Ladd en The Blue Dahlia. Esta interesante producción británica va un paso más allá, hundiendo al protagonista en el mundo del hampa. Su final desalentador es coherente con su implacable cinismo.

No soy cultor del cine británico en general, pero ésta la verdad que es muy buena.
