La primera película de Terry Zwigoff, el director de Crumb y de Ghost World. Se trata de un documental sobre el casi desconocido músico de country-blues y artista Howard "Louie Bluie" Armstrong, miembro de la última banda negra de cuerdas en Estados Unidos. Gran seductor y narrador, además de intérprete, Louie es un personaje tremendamente entretenido, y Zwigoff lo honra con un homenaje no sentimental, pero sí muy cariñoso.

Zwigoff comenzó su carrera en el cine accidentalmente en 1978, cuando encontró una rara grabación de 1934 de un desconocido músico de blues de Chicago. Siendo él mismo un músico, Zwigoff se impresionó tanto con la música que comenzó lo que sería un trabajo detectivesco de dos años para descubrir quién era el artista y cómo había sido su vida. Louie Bluie fue el resultado.

As beguiling a raconteur as he is a performer, Louie makes for a wildly entertaining movie subject, and Zwigoff honors him with an unsentimental but endlessly affectionate tribute. Full of infectious music and comedy, Louie Bluie is a humane evocation of the kind of pop-cultural marginalia that Zwigoff would continue to excavate in the coming years.
