 El silencio antes de Bach

En este homenaje a la música de Johann Sebastian Bach, Portabella se acerca a ella de variadas maneras, en diferentes capítulos, momentos o viñetas, en los cuales experimenta dispares asociaciones entre el cine y la música. Yendo del presente al pasado, de un país a otro, y de uno a otro idioma, la música de Bach se corresponde en la creación de Portabella con movimientos de pianos, pasos de danza de un caballo, o de un organista ante el instrumento, y llega a momentos sublimes como cuando es ejecutada por decenas de violoncelistas que tocan una suite en el subterráneo, o por un camionero en su fagot, por una bella intérprete de celo, o por un angelical coro de niños.

Obviamente, el film nos evoca la Crónica de Anna Magdalena Bach, del matrimonio Straub-Huillet, pero Portabella pone un acento posmoderno en su anti-biopic, en el cual no es la figura del compositor lo más importante sino su música y el poder de la misma.

No hay reglas para estas fascinantes asociaciones entre música e imagen, que llegan hasta la representación abstracta de una obra para clave. Portabella demuestra que música, historia, matemáticas, religión, humor y erotismo, y hasta aquello más cotidiano, están íntimamente relacionados y forman parte de la cultura europea y en parte también de la nuestra. You could say that these three make beautiful music together, though this observation doesn’t capture the contrapuntal complexity of the film, which unfolds note against note, scene against scene.(...) I didn’t find “The Silence Before Bach” immediately accessible, though this is far from a complaint. The film demands engagement and a kind of surrender, a willingness to enter into a work shaped by correlation, metaphor and metonymy, by beautiful images and fragments of ideas, a work that locates the music in the twitching of a dog’s ears, in the curve of a woman’s belly, a child’s song and an adult’s reverie. Die Stille vor Bach és una aproximació a la música i a les disciplines i oficis que l'envolten a través de l'obra de Johann Sebastian Bach. Una mirada sobre les profundes relacions dramatúrgiques que existeixen entre imatge i música, de forma que no es concebi aquesta última com a simple subratllat subsidiari de la imatge, sinó com a subjecte paritari del relat. Portabella proposa un passeig pels segles XVIII, XIX i XXI de la mà de J.S. Bach.
