Tommy Woodry (Bobby Driscoll) es un pequeño dado a contar mentiras y fantasías a cualquiera que le preste oídos, lo mismo inventa peleas entre policías y bandidos que fantasías como que su pobre familia es dueña de un rancho en Tombstone, cosa que casi logra que su familia pierda el apartamento. Su madre Mary (Barbara Hale) y su padre Ed (Arthur Kennedy) están sumamente preocupados por la tendencia del muchacho a fantasear y nadie lo toma en serio. Así, cuando Tommy, en una noche de calor sale a dormir en la escalera de incendios, es testigo de un crimen en el apartamento de arriba, perpetrado por Joe (Paul Stewart) y Jean Kellerson (Ruth Roman). El niño trata inútilmente de que su madre o la policía misma le crean, cosa que dados sus antecedentes no consigue, más al ser testigo se ha convertido en blanco del matrimonio asesino que buscará guardar el secreto a toda costa. Cuando se queda solo, la pareja de homicidas intentará eliminarlo.

Set and filmed on location in the tenement section of New York's Lower East Side, the film tells the story of a young boy (Driscoll) who has a habit of crying wolf. Late one night he climbs up the building fire escape and sees two people murder a drunken sailor. No one, not even the boy's parents, believes young Tommy when he tells what he has seen, since they all assume that this is just another of the boy's tall tales.

Une Incroyable histoire

À New-York, dans un immense immeuble. Ce soir d'été, il fait très chaud dans l'appartement des Woodry. Le fils de la maison, Tommy, ne pouvant pas dormir dans sa chambre, s'installe pour la nuit sur le balcon. À travers son sommeil, il aperçoit, dans l'escalier qui donne en vis-à-vis, un meurtre... Lorsqu'il raconte son histoire, ses parents ne pensent qu'à un rêve. Mais le voisin d'en face sait que l'enfant a vu son geste...
