Billy Fisher (Courtenay) lives with his parents and works for scornful undertaker Shadrack (Rossiter). To alleviate the spirit-crushing tedium of his rigidly confined life he constructs an elaborate web of lies, principally that he's a budding screenwriter. His runaway mouth has also got him engaged to three different women: homely Barbara, (Fraser) shrewish Rita (Watts) and proto-hippie chick Liz (Christie). His one hope for escape is that he might sell a script to comedian Danny Boon (Randall). But when a genuine opportunity to get away presents itself, Billy bottles it and retreats back into a world of fantasy.

A tragicomic story about bos who even in times of war remember how to play soldiers, dream of heroic deeds, spy on girls, show off in front of friends, and make up adventures. Despite the Communist regime, director Stefan Uher socceeded in turning Milan Ferko's and Elo Havetta's screenplay into a vivid picture with a theme often romanticized and distorted by ideology.
